Presentation by
Dr. Phillippa Lally from University College London.

Phillippa graduated with a BSc (first class hons) in Psychology from the University of Warwick in 2002 and then completed an MSc and PhD in Health Psychology at UCL in 2004 and 2007 respectively.

Following her PhD she was awarded an ESRC Postdoctoral fellowship to continue this work.
Between 2008 and 2017 Phillippa has taken time out to be with her young family but returned to the research group at UCL for short periods to support various projects.  In 2017 she made a more permanent return to the group as the Trial Manager for the ASCOT Trial.

Phillippa's PhD and fellowship work focused on habit formation and weight control.  She conducted a study tracking participants as they attempted to form a new habit and modelled the increase in automaticity over time at an individual level.  This paper has been widely cited in both academic work and the media.  Phillippa remains focused on habit formation and how it can be used as a strategy to help people to change their health behaviours.  She has recently co-authored a chapter on the topic in a book dedicated to the psychology of habit.  Phillippa is the Trial Manager for the ASCOT Trial which is a habit-based lifestyle intervention for breast, prostate and colorectal cancer patients.

Phillippa has also conducted research in the area of social norms for food and drink consumption and weight loss interventions for adults and young people with learning disabilities.
